Service Description
The European Settlement Map is a spatial raster dataset that is mapping human settlements in Europe based on SPOT5 and SPOT6 satellite imagery. It is published with two associated data layers. It has been produced with Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) technology by the European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen, Global Security and Crisis Management Unit. This work has been partly financed by the Directorate General of Regional and Urb an Policy, European Commission. The European Settlement Map 2016 (also referred as 'EUGHSL2016') represents percentage of built-up area coverage per spatial unit using 2012 satellite images. The GHSL method uses machine learning techniques in order to understand systematic relations between morphological and textural (pantex) features, extracted from the multispectral and panchromatic (if available) bands, describing the human settlement.

Registered first time 11 Feb 2015
Service Description
The forest type product is closely aligned to the FAO forest definition. in the sense that the 20m x 20m forest type products are produced from the tree cover density product. In addition, trees under agricultural use and in urban context (from the additional support layer) are excluded for the 100m x 100m products. For EEA purposes, this means that fruit trees and olive groves tree are removed for the 100m product, while cover in tradi-tional agroforestry systems such as Dehesa/Montado, is included. The view service shows the intermediate (non final) forest type (FTY) product at 20 meter spatial resolution. Mapped is the dominant leaf type (broad-leaf/coniferous). The data is available as raster data in European projection (EPSG: 3035) with 20 and 100m resolution.

Service Description
The modified “natural and semi-natural grassland” (NGR) focusses on the natural part of the use-intensity range, with some of the semi-natural grasslands included. The production workflow was based on an initial image segmentation. Information derived from the biophysical parameter layers is added to the objects from the image segmentation. Then a semi-automated classification is applied, followed by manual editing (aided by individual country assessments).

Service Description
The HRL on permanent water bodies maps permanent lakes and ponds, rivers and coastal water surfaces, such as lagoons and estuaries. It does not include the sea and ocean, as well as liquid dump sites. The mapping of permanent water bodies HRL is using the same time series of high resolution satellite images, and seasonal time series of medium-resolution satellite images, that is also used for the wetland mapping. A pixel is classified as water if open water covers >90% of a pixel (including shallow open water and submerged vegetation).

Service Description
This includes wetlands both associated or not to permanent water bodies, wetlands with macrophyte vegetation cover or without vegetation, peatlands and coastal wetlands. Not considered are temporary water-logged areas, permanent water surfaces and wet agricultural fields, including rice fields. Due to the highly dynamic seasonal character of many wetlands, a time series of satellite images is used in a complex workflow that is very closely related to the production of the water bodies HRL.

Registered first time 03 Aug 2015
Service Description
The LUCAS survey, carried out by EUROSTAT on a three-yearly basis since 2006, focuses on the state and the dynamics of changes in land use and cover in the European Union. The survey is carried out in-situ; a large number of observations are made and registered throughout the EU. In 2012, all 27 EU countries have been covered and over 270,000 points have been analysed on different land cover types (cropland, grassland, forest, built-up areas, transport network, etc.). On these points, the surveyors have examined the land cover and land use, irrigation management and structural elements in the landscape. In addition, a 500 gr top-soil sample is taken in one out of 10 points. These samples are analysed in a laboratory and used for purposes related to assessing environmental factors, such as updating European soil maps, validating soil models, and measuring the quantity of organic carbon in the soil which is an important factor influencing the climate change. More information about the LUCAS survey (methodology and classification) can be found at the Eurostat LUCAS website. The data sources are:
