Service Description

The applied solution for the harmonization combines CLC status and change layers in the 100m raster form in order to create homogeneous quality time series of CLC / CLC-change layers for accounting purposes. The so called "adjusted CLC layers" fulfilling the relation: CLC-change = Adjusted CLC_ new status – Adjusted CLC old status. The adjustment method maximizes compatibility of “backdated” CLC status layers with CLC2012 and each other. The harmonization ("adjustment") was carried out on the version 18_5 of Corine Land Cover European database (RELEASE v18_5; dated 02/2016).

CLC2012 is the 4th CORINE Land Cover inventory and took 3 years to finalize. A dual coverage of satellite images were used. The number of countries using advanced (bottom-up) solutions has slightly increased. All of the EEA39 countries have participated.
Description
Land Cover (CLC) is an European programme, coordinated by the European Environment Agency (EEA), providing consistent information on land cover and land cover changes across Europe. CLC products are based on the photointerpretation of satellite images by the national teams of the participating countries - the EEA member or cooperating countries. The resulting national land cover inventories are further integrated into a seamless land cover map of Europe. The resulting European database is based on standard methodology and nomenclature with following base parameters: - 44 classes in the hierarchical 3-level Corine nomenclature - minimum mapping unit (MMU) for status layers is 25 hectares - minimum width of linear elements is 100 metres - minimum mapping unit (MMU) for Land Cover Changes (LCC) for change layers is 5 hectares CLC programme provides important data sets supporting the implementation of key priority areas of the Environment Action Programmes of the European Community as protecting ecosystems, halting the loss of biological diversity, tracking the impacts of climate change, assessing developments in agriculture and implementing the EU Water Framework Directive etc.. CLC programme is also a part of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES http://gmes.info) initiative, run by the European Commission and the European Space Agency, which will provide environmental information from a combination of air- and space-based observation systems and in-situ monitoring. Description
One of the major tasks undertaken in the framework of the Corine programme has been the establishment of a computerised inventory on the land cover. Data on land cover is necessary for the environment policy as well as for other policies such as regional development and agriculture. At the same time it provides one of the basic inputs for the production of more complex information on other themes (soil erosion, pollutant emission into the air by the vegetation, etc.). The objectives of the land cover project are: - to provide those responsible for and interested in the European policy on the environment with quantitative data on land cover, consistent and comparable across Europe; - to prepare one comprehensive land cover database for the 15 EC Member States and other European and North African countries, at an original scale of 1: 100 000, using 44 classes of the 3-level Corine nomenclature.

Service Description
The indicator is based on the method of Effective Mesh Size (meff, Jaeger 2000). The effective mesh size (meff) can be interpreted as the area that is accessible when starting a movement at a randomly chosen point inside a landscape without encountering a physical barrier (hereafter a Fragmentation Geometry). meff expresses the probability that any two points chosen randomly in an area are connected; that is, not separated by Fragmentation Geometries (FGs) such as transport routes or built-up areas. Hence meff is a measure of landscape connectivity, i.e. the degree to which movements between different parts of the landscape is possible. meff is measured as an area (km2), within 1km2 cell size regular grids as reporting units. Please note that the size of the reporting unit does not have an effect on the indicator. The index Effective Mesh Density (seff) is a measure of landscape fragmentation, i.e. the degree to which movement between different parts of the landscape is interrupted by FGs. The seff value is calculated as 1000/meff, hence number of meshes per 1000 km2. The map shows the distribution of fragmentation classes across Europe. Classes represent the number of meshes per 1 000 km2. Light colors mean less fragmentation pressure and dark colors mean higher fragmentation pressure of urban and transport infrastructure expansion.

This service represents the regions for level 0 (country), 1, 2 and 3 of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) for 2010. The NUTS nomenclature is a hierarchical classification of statistical regions and subdivides the EU economic territory into regions of three different levels (NUTS 1, 2 and 3, respectively, moving from larger to smaller territorial units). This server shows the administrative units for each level. The NUTS classification has been officially established through Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council and amendments. A non official NUTS-like classification has been defined for the EFTA countries and candidate countries. An introduction to the NUTS classification is available here: http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/nuts_nomenclature/introductionThis data set has been created mainly from the EuroBoundary Map v 5.0 (Eurogeographics), geographic information from TurkStat for Turkey, the Global Administrative Unit Layer from FAO (UN) for Macedonia and a list of communes per statistical region provided by the countries. Six scale ranges (100K, 1M, 3M, 10M and 20M, 60M) are available. The public data set (1M - 60M) is available for download at http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/gisco_Geographical_information_maps/popups/references/administrative_units_statistical_units_1 The full data set (100K - 60M) is available to EEA due to EEA having a valid EBM v5.0 licence.

Service Description
Landscape fragmentation caused by transportation infrastructure and built-up areas has a number of ecological effects. It contributes significantly to the decline and loss of wildlife populations and to the increasing endangerment of species in Europe, for example through the dissection and isolation of populations, and affects the water regime and the recreational quality of landscapes. In spite of the planning concept of preserving large unfragmented areas, fragmentation has continued to increase during the last 20 years, and many more new transportation infrastructure projects are planned, in particular in eastern Europe, which will further increase the level of landscape fragmentation significantly. Note: Seff = -2 fully fragmented urban (barrier) areas Seff = -1 (no colour) mountains and large rivers that are excluded from calculation Seff = 0 to 1 000 000 (number of meshes per 1 000 sq. km) Data source:http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/external/european-forest-landscape-pattern-fragmentation
Description

Service Description
The land take indicator addresses the change in the area of agricultural, forest and other semi-natural land “taken” for urban and other artificial land development (hence the name “Land take”). Land take includes areas sealed by construction and urban infrastructure, as well as urban green areas, and sport and leisure facilities. The main drivers of land take are grouped in processes resulting in the extension of: • housing, services and recreation; • industrial and commercial sites; • transport networks and infrastructures; • mines, quarries and waste dumpsites; • construction sites. The data is derived from the Corine Land Cover accounting layers: https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/corine-land-cover-accounting-layers#tab-european-data The intensity of Land Take is calculated as Land Take in the given period in % of artificial surfaces in the year 2000. For easier comparability Land Take is summarised within NUTS3 regions.

Service Description
The Land use/cover area frame survey (LUCAS) was initially developed to deliver, on a yearly basis, European crop estimates for the European Commission. With time, the survey has become essential in providing policymakers and statisticians alike with increasing amounts of data on different forms of land use in Europe and proved to be a useful tool in the area of environmental monitoringTraditionally land has been considered as a basis for comparing statistics in specific domains (e.g. agricultural statistics in different geographical areas) and rarely as an independent issue As a consequence the official statistics linked to land are often spread among different statistical fields (agriculture, environment, forestry, etc.) and not always well integrated. With the growing need for matching both dimensions (land cover and land use), Eurostat started to produce harmonized land cover/use statistics in addition to the traditional specific ones linked to a particular land cover/use type (e.g. agriculture, etc). This harmonised information on land cover and land use is collected through the LUCAS survey, which is directly implemented by Eurostat. The specific land cover/use statistics are collected in co-operation with the EU countries. The most important specific land cover/use data collection activities are linked to agriculture (Crop statistics and Farm Structure Survey), forestry and environment .ComparabilityDue to mainly methodological differences, the overall data (LUCAS) and topic specific land cover/use data are not always comparable.Eurostat's land cover and land use dataThe Eurostat land cover/use database contains statistics down to the NUTS 2 level and landscape indicators at national level.Data source: http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/lucas/data

Service Description

The indicator is based on the method of Effective Mesh Size (meff, Jaeger 2000). The effective mesh size (meff) can be interpreted as the area that is accessible when starting a movement at a randomly chosen point inside a landscape without encountering a physical barrier (hereafter a Fragmentation Geometry. The index Effective Mesh Density (seff) is a measure of landscape fragmentation, i.e. the degree to which movement between different parts of the landscape is interrupted by FGs. The seff value is calculated as 1000/meff, hence number of meshes per 1000 km2. 1km2 cell size regular grid is used as reporting units. Please note that the size of the reporting unit does not have an effect on the indicator. For a detailed methodology, please consult the indicator fact sheet.

Nitrate Vulnerable Zones as designated under the Nitrates Directive shown with related optional information from other European datasets. Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZ) are designated by the EU Member States (MS) as a part of the implementation of the Nitrates Directive (NiD), Art. 3. NVZ are areas of land that drain into polluted waters or waters at risk of pollution if no action is taken. Some MS have adopted a whole territory approach (WTA) where their action programme applies for the whole national territory which does not necessary mean that the whole territory is at risk of pollution. The maps refer to reports for the period 2004-2007 with subsequent changes as notified by Member States in electronic format. Service Description
This WMS includes the refined version of the degree of urbanisation dataset for Europe. The degree of urbanisation relies on a population grid to classify local units. Originally the classification system was developed for the European Statistical System to classify local units into three classes: cities, towns & suburbs, and rural areas. This system was further refined to capture the full settlement hierarchy. The degree of urbanisation is applied in a two-step process: First the grid cells are defined based on density, contiguity and population size. Subsequently small spatial units are defined based on the type of grid cells most of their population resides in. The dataset is based on 2011 population grid of GEOSTAT and the European Settlement Map 2012 from Copernicus, identifies six classes: 1) cities, 2) towns, 3) suburbs, 4) villages, 5) dispersed rural areas and 6) mostly uninhabited areas.

Service Description

The dataset illustrates the potential of soils to serve as a soil biodiversity pool. The potential is expressed as an indexed value from 1 (lowest potential) to 10 (highest potential).

The potentials of soil biodiversity throughout Europe have been assessed and mapped by using critical thresholds of the selected variables (e.g. soil PH, texture, land cover among others) that potentially affect the conditions of soils for biodiversity and thus soil biodiversity levels. The dataset has been validated with existing data on soil biodiversity of different projects throughout Europe.
