Service Description

Map shows bathing water locations and their quality for the latest as well as previous bathing seasons whereas all symbols (charts, circles and squares with bather) are coloured according to achieved quality status in the most recent season. Data are presented on two levels: country (less detailed scales) and bathing water (more detailed scales).

Data aggregated by country are visualised as stacked charts showing the distribution of bathing water quality classes by country. Number of bathing waters per each quality class is listed in pop-up window which appears when user clicks on the selected country on the map. In more detailed scales individual bathing waters are coloured according to quality status achieved in the most recent season. Pop-up windows can be opened with a click on individual bathing water monitoring site. The pop-up window shows various information regarding particular bathing water such as bathing water name, coordinates, link (URL) to national bathing water profile and assessment statuses.

The assessment statuses are as follows:

1. monitoring calendar status – describes implementation of monitoring calendar in the last reporting season as defined in Directive 2006/7/EC,Annex IV. The monitoring calendar status is assessed as “implemented” if pre-season sample was taken before the bathing season start, no fewer than four (alternatively, three) samples were taken during the bathing season and interval between sampling dates never exceeded one month. The monitoring calendar is assessed as “not implemented” if at least one of these requirements is not met and the reasons for suspensio

Map shows monitoring water locations and quality of bathing water from 2005 till 2015. For the scale 1:5.000.001 and less detailed, data are aggregated by country. In such case, stacked bars show percentage of bathing water quality for coastal and inland waters together. Number of bathing waters within certain category is seen in pop up window which can be turned on with a click on one of the countries. For the scale range 1:5 000.000 to 1:700,001, individual bathing water sites (points) are visible instead of classified stacked charts and are coloured according to the classification of bathing water quality. Symbol size depends on the map scale (in more detailed map scales symbols are bigger). For the scales 1:700,000 and more detailed, symbol of bather in a square appears instead of points. All symbols (charts, circles and squares with bather) are colored according to achieved quality status. Pop-up windows can be opened with a click on individual bathing water monitoring site.\n\nMonitoring requirements such as the taking of a pre-season sample, a minimum of four samples per season and a minimum of one sample per month must be met for all bathing waters. If these rules are satisfied, the bathing water is categorised as 'sampling frequency satisfied'. If at least one monitoring requirement is not fulfilled the bathing water is categorized as 'sampling frequency not satisfied'. In such cases, bathing water can still be quality assessed if at least four samples per season (three samples if the season does not exceed eight weeks or the region is subject to special geographical constraints) are available and are more or less equally distributed throughout the season. Assessment of bathing water quality is possible when the bathing-water sample dataset is available for four consecutive seasons. The map displays bathing water locations and their quality for the latest (2022) as well as previous bathing seasons. Symbols such as charts, circles, and squares with bathers are colored based on the achieved quality status in the most recent (2022) season. The data is presented at two levels: country (less detailed scales) and bathing water (more detailed scales).

Data aggregated by country are represented as stacked charts, illustrating the distribution of bathing water quality classes. The number of bathing waters in each quality class is listed in a pop-up window that appears when the user clicks on a selected country on the map. At a more detailed scale, individual bathing waters are colored according to the quality status achieved in the most recent season. By clicking on an individual bathing water monitoring site, a pop-up window opens, providing various information about that specific bathing water, including its name, coordinates, a link (URL) to the national bathing water profile, and the achieved quality class. The quality status of the bathing waters is classified based on two microbiological parameters (Escherichia coli and Intestinal enterococci) defined in Directive 2006/7/EC Annexes I and II. The quality status describes the microbiological quality of water, considering that enough samples are available, as defined in Directive 2006/7/EC, Art. 4.3. Bathing waters can achieve one of four quality classes: "Excellent," "Good," "Sufficient," or "Poor." If there are not enough samples available for quality classification, the status "Not classified" is applied.

The historical data, listed in the pop-up window, includes the bathing water quality classification for the past ten years (2012-2022). To ensure comparability with the classification of the preceding Bathing Water Directive 76/160/EEC, the quality classes "Good" and "Sufficient" are m

Map shows bathing water sites and water quality data from 2002 until 2012 when zoomed in. When zoomed out aggregated data by countries for selected year appear.See reports, data and other information at European Environment Agency’s bathing water webpage. For the scales 1:5.000.000 and less detailed, data are aggregated by country. In such cases, stacked bars show percentage of bathing water quality for coastal and inland waters together. Number of bathing waters within certain category is seen in a pop up window which can be turned on with a click on one of the countries. For the scales less than 1:5.000.000, individual bathing water sites (points) are visible and are coloured according to the classification of bathing water quality. Symbol size depends on the map scale (in more detailed map scales, symbols are bigger).Data source: http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/bathing-water-directive-status-of-bathing-water-7

For the scales 1:5.000.000 and less detailed, data are aggregated by country. In such case, a pie or bar charts show 1) the distribution of the different bathing water categories, 2) percentage of inland waters (lakes and rivers) and coastal waters, and 3) percentage of bathing water quality for coastal waters and inland waters. For the scale more detailed than 1:5.000.000, individual bathing water sites (points) are visible instead of classified cartogram and are coloured according the classification of bathing water quality. Symbol size depends on the map scale (more detailed map = bigger symbols). Symbol shape depends on bathing water type (sea, lake, and river) where the bathing place is placed. For bathing places that are insufficiently sampled under the strict frequency rules, orange outline of symbol showing status of bathing places by less strict rules is presented. For an explanation of less strict and strict rules see the chapter “Information about the data”.
